Course overview

At a time when our focus is increasingly on all things artificial, we should remain vigilant to the evolving forms of financial statement manipulation and fraud. In this session, we will explore emerging fraud trends specific to the Malaysian market, including how to spot red flags relating to money laundering, over-collateralisation, off-balance-sheet debt, and associates and joint ventures. The course will draw on a number of Malaysian‑centred fraud cases as practical case studies, alongside global case studies such as Wirecard.

Melvin Glapion is founder and researcher at Mithra Forensic Research, a US-based investment research firm focused on accounting shorts, which leverages forensic accounting models to detect fraud and manipulation in financial statements. Glapion previously worked as managing director and the head of office for Kroll’s Los Angeles and London branches, where he handled a broad cross-section of risk consulting engagements, examining fraud, corruption, bribery and cybercrime as well as conducting internal investigations and stakeholder mapping. Before that, he worked in strategy consulting with KPMG and investment banking with Merrill Lynch. Glapion is a Harvard MBA graduate.
